The check is the total amount raised over the past six years from the Get Prepared, California! Auction, sponsored by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) and coordinated by iHeartMedia to support American Red Cross disaster-preparedness and relief efforts in California.
Before the evening concert, the Wango Tango Village in the Stub Hub parking lot—sponsored by CEA and produced by iHeartMedia—helped inform and educate event-goers about the need for earthquake awareness and preparedness.
Visitors had a chance to sit in the Quake Cottage Earthquake Simulator and experience just what a larger-magnitude earthquake would feel like. There was also a “Drop, Cover and Hold On!” station where they could practice taking cover under a table in the station to protect their heads and bodies from falling debris in the event of an earthquake. Participants were able to share pictures of themselves taking cover under the table on social media channels using the hashtag #EQriskisreal.
Also in the village was an iHeartMedia-sponsored Virtual Reality Experience, which allowed participants to experience a 4-D earthquake simulation that gave instruction on what to do during an earthquake. Additionally, they could walk through a CEA-provided mobile trailer, which looped CEA marketing spots and an educational mitigation video for viewing. The trailer also had electronic tablets linking viewers to a website that pinpoints various quakes that have occurred throughout the state. Using these interactive devices, participants were able to learn where faults are located and where there is the most earthquake activity in California.
