Research Forums & Workshops

In 2023, the CEA Best Available Science Committee (BASC) hosted a workshop centered around Earthquake Risk Management (ERM). The workshop was held on Tuesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

The workshop gathered insurance, reinsurance, modeling, and geo-hazard professionals together to discuss how the ERM community can work more closely with the earthquake rupture forecast model developers.

The main goal of this workshop was to assemble a committee for approaching the challenging issues involved in developing earthquake rupture models, how they get implemented into the National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) and the impact of different modeling assumptions on ERM, particularly issues related to portfolio risk assessment.

Past Research Forums

2021 Research Forum

The 2021 CEA Research Forum was held virtually on Monday, September 20 and Tuesday, September 21, 2021. The forum concentrated on Equitable Residential Earthquake Resilience in California, with the focus on translating research into action.

In October 2021, a low-income supplemental grant was introduced in conjunction with the Earthquake Brace + Bolt program. As the world transitioned out of the COVID-19 pandemic, new experience with health science communication and the inequitable impacts of a disaster on vulnerable communities helped to inform and improve the proposed grant. The conference discussed “lessons from the pandemic” and resilience equity issues which assisted in developing strategies for a successful program launch, and to promote resilience justice throughout the state.

2020 Research Forum

In 2020, CEA teamed up with the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) to host the 2020 Research Forum on Residential Seismic Retrofits.

The 2020 CEA Research Forum was held virtually on Monday, October 26 and Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

Topics focused on:

  • Current understanding of seismic risk for wood-frame single-family residential (SFR) structures and the tools available
  • Describing the CEA/PEER project and findings
    • “Quantifying the Performance of Retrofit of Cripple Walls and Sill Plate Anchorage in Single-Family Wood-frame Buildings”
  • Identifying remaining gaps in research, and potential research programs
  • Implications of SFR earthquake risks

2019 Research Forum

The 2019 CEA Research Forum "Post Event: Data Collection - Lessons Learned - Damage Assessment" was a one-day event on Tuesday, September 17, 2019.

The Forum centered around the discussion of post event data collection and methods for collecting data on seismic activity, and structural performance of residential dwellings in impacted areas.

2018 Research Forum

The 2018 CEA Research Forum "Innovation in Earthquake Risk Assessment: How Technology is Changing the Industry" was held February 22-23, 2018 at the Sacramento Convention Center. View the agenda (PDF) for more information, and watch panel videos and interviews from the forum.
