Earthquake Brace + Bolt Grant Program Opens Again For 2025. Grant Program Expands To Rentals.

The California Residential Mitigation Program (CRMP) announced today its second Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) grant registration period for 2025, running from August 20 through October 1. For the first time, this open registration expands eligibility to include non-primary residential properties, giving landlords and other property owners the opportunity to apply for seismic retrofit grants to strengthen wood-framed, homes built before 1980 with raised foundations against earthquake damage.

Tillis, Padilla, Cassidy, Schiff Introduce Legislation to Exclude Catastrophe Mitigation Payments from Income Taxes

Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and Adam Schiff (D-CA) introduced the Disaster Mitigation and Tax Parity Act of 2025, legislation that excludes from gross income, for income tax purposes, any qualified catastrophe mitigation payment made under a state-based catastrophe loss mitigation program. 

Registration Opens October 15th for Earthquake Soft-Story Grants

Starting today, qualified homeowners in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pasadena, Berkeley, Oakland, as well as additional surrounding cities, can apply for grants to strengthen their homes against earthquake damage with up to $13,000 in financial assistance. The Earthquake Soft-Story (ESS) Program provides financial assistance to homeowners to complete a code-compliant seismic retrofit of their home.

AM Best Revises Issuer Credit Rating Outlook to Stable for California Earthquake Authority

AM Best has revised the outlook to stable from negative for the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (Long-Term ICR) and affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of B++ (Good) and the Long-Term ICR of “bbb+” (Good) of California Earthquake Authority (CEA) (Sacramento, CA).

California Earthquake Authority’s Governing Board Announces Leadership Change

The Governing Board of the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) has announced that Tom Welsh, CEA’s Chief Legal and Compliance Officer, has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive Officer. Tom Welsh assumes the Interim CEO role following Glenn Pomeroy’s decision to step down as CEO following 16 years of service.
